Air Force hockey coach Frank Serratore has made it clear that it will take a high level of competition from his team on a nightly basis to earn wins in a talented college hockey landscape.
He got close to a superhuman effort from the Falcons in the third period and in overtime Saturday.
Trailing 3-1 to open the final period at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Air Force netted two goals — including a short-handed score — to force overtime and got a game winner from junior forward Austin Schwartz in the extra frame for a 4-3 final.
The short-hander was scored by sophomore forward Mason McCormick, and senior defenseman and captain Luke Rowe tacked on another at even strength.
Senior forward Will Gavin opened the scoring for the Falcons with a power-play goal in the second period. Air Force was trailing the Seawolves 3-0 at the time. Sophomore defenseman Chris Hedden got the assist.
Air Force has split its first three series to begin the season, entering a battle for Colorado Springs against undefeated Colorado College with an even 3-3 record.
